The Lumix GH5S is a micro 4/3 mirrorless camera with impressive video capabilities that’s compatible with LUMIX and LEICA lenses. An update to the GH5 aimed at videographers, it features a new 10.28-megapixel sensor that can shoot in multiple aspect ratios (4:3, 17:9, 16:9, and 3:2). It’s optimized for low light with a dual native ISO of 400 and 2500 and is perfect for night-shooting in up to -5EV light.
Panasonic’s preinstalled 4:2:2 10-bit V-Log L provides a nearly flat gamma curve and 12 stops of dynamic range. Autofocus is fast (240 fps) and crisp with an impressive 1080p resolution.
However, video is where this camera hits its stride. With a 299 MB/s write speed and 300 MB/s read speed, high-resolution capture is a given. The camera has unlimited in-camera recording in either DCI 4K at 60p in 4:2:0 8-bit, or at 30p for an astounding 4:2:2, 10-bit and 400mbps. Connect to an external monitor or recorder via Type A HDMI.
You can grab slow motion shots at up to 10x, but if high frame rate shooting is what you’re after, you’ll get clips at 240 fps and 1080p. Just remember—you’ll need UHS-II SDXC memory cards to handle those big video files. You’ll also get BNC Timecode in or out, which is usually found only on professional video systems, and you can easily record professional-quality audio by connecting an external mic via the 3.5mm input. For professional-grade stereo audio at a stunning 96kHz/24bit, consider adding the DMW-XLR1 Microphone.
The GH5S is a reliable option for shooting stills since it takes 14-bit raw stills at 14 frames per second. It has burst shooting capabilities at AF, eight frames per second with AFC, and 12-frames per second burst with AFS.
