This telephoto zoom is designed for Sony full-frame E-mount cameras, but is compatible with crop-sensor cameras, creating a 105–300mm focal length. It’s ideal in any situation where you require a long view, such as sports photography. With a nine-blade, f/4 maximum aperture, you’ll get consistent, high-performance, and control over blur while using selective focus techniques and shallow depth of field. However, if you’ll be shooting in super-low light, consider the Sony 135mm or the Batis 135mm instead.
The lens is constructed from 21 elements divided into 15 groups. Two advanced aspherical elements and one aspherical element combine to take care of spherical and monochromatic aberrations, coma, and field curvature. Two extra-low dispersion glass elements and a Super ED element eliminate chromatic aberrations and color fringing. Each element has been treated with Sony’s Nano AR coating, which removes ghosting, flare, and surface reflections.
With internal focusing and dual linear motors, autofocus is silent, fast, and accurate, even at a mere 3.3 feet away from your subject. It also has Object Tracking and Optical SteadyShot to eliminate camera shake during low shutter speeds. Two options are available: General works for most shooting scenarios, and a higher setting is optimized for panning. SteadyShot can work in tandem with the sensor-shift image stabilization available on some cameras, and will give you even more control over your bokeh. Refine your focus further using the electronic focus range limiter and three focus hold buttons.
The lens has been sealed against weather and dust, so you can use it pretty much anywhere. A removable, rotating tripod collar provides extra stability. It has a 0.13x maximum magnification, a 34° to 12° angle of view, and is compatible with 72mm front filters.
