An update to the EOS 7D, this camera features a 24.2-megapixel (APS-C) CMOS sensor, the DIGIC 6 Image Processor, and Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus, which assigns two photodiodes per pixel for phase-difference detection.
A mechanical shutter system has speeds from 1/8 to 3 seconds, can shoot at up to 7 fps, and even has a silent mode available for up to 3 fps, making continuous shooting unobtrusive. With an ISO range of ISO 1–16 that’s expandable to 1–256 for stills and 16–256 for video, this camera performs in low light conditions down to EV -3.
The Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus system is fully customizable. Choose from Single- point AF, where you direct the autofocus to one point; Zone AF, where you’ll have the option of choosing one of nine zones; Large Zone AF, where the 45-point system is broken into three zones; or rely on the AF system to select one of the 45 points and focus for you. It also comes with an RGB+IR metering sensor that helps with exposure and detects skin color for meticulous detail.
Compose stills and video using the Intelligent Viewfinder or the 3-inch vari-angle touchscreen LCD, which can display optional focus and other information in a grid if you choose. It can also be used to get footage and photos from any angle with the ability to rotate 27° vertically and 175° horizontally.
Take HD video at 18p at either 23.98, 29.97 (9 Mbps in MOV), or 59.94 (6 Mbps in MP4) fps. The AI Servo autofocus identifies skin color and tracks your subject based on their skin tone, making autofocus precise, even during fast motion. Plus, in HDR, each frame can be captured at the initial exposure and also be slightly underexposed—when combined, this creates a more dynamic range of color. Getting professional quality audio is easy since a 3.5mm headphone jack allows for easy audio monitoring, while another 3.5mm microphone jack makes it easy to connect your favorite microphone.
The EOS 8D is compatible with most Canon EF and EF-S-mount lenses. It has built-in WiFi and NFC, and still images can be transferred between WiFi enabled Canon cameras over a Local Area Network (LAN). With the free Canon Camera Connect app, it’s easy to send images to your smart device or use it as a remote control.
Save your editable RAW files and JPGs to SDHC or XC cards, and enjoy this camera’s long battery life (91 shots per charge). Although construction is rugged, this camera is not weather sealed, so keep that in mind if you plan to be using it outside.
